Abstract
The thesis investigates the effects of thermal stabilization and treatment of silica nanofibers on their solubility in simulated body fluids and similar solutions. The aim of this study is to determine the dissolution rates of silica nanofibers as the indicator of their biodurability. For this purpose, static and dynamic solubility tests were performed. Silica nanofibers were prepared via electrospinning and sol-gel methods at the Technical University of Liberec. The thermal properties of the nanofibers were analyzed using TG analysis. Krypton adsorption/desorption measurements were employed to measure the specific surface area. The morphology of nanofibers was examined by SEM. In order, to quantify the dissolved silica, the amount of silicon in the samples was monitored using ICP/AES. The results show a strong dependence of silica nanofiber dissolution rates on the type of medium and the temperature of stabilization. It is identified that silica nanofiber dissolution rates are significantly enhanced by higher ionic strength, higher content of organic matter, and higher pH of medium. Furthermore, the higher temperature of silica nanofiber stabilization leads to reduction of their dissolution rates. The correlation between the half-lives of silica nanofibers and stabilization temperature were calculated for all simulated body fluids.
