Abstract
This diploma thesis deals with the theme of improving reading literacy in English reading classes. The aim was to prove the positive influence of regular reading activities upon the development of children´s reading skills as well as their attitude towards reading. The key method of the research and the instrument of a continuous evaluation of the whole investigation was case study. The specific feature of the research was a long-term work and observation of the group of primary school children during their reading classes. The longtime yearlong work with the concrete group of children of primary school was its specific. The activities included in the reading classes corresponded with the required methodological principles of developing reading in a foreign language with the emphasis on three-stage reading process. The children´s reactions and approaches to the activities were assessed in light of regular records in both the teacher and children reading diaries and according to the results obtained from the questionnaires for the children. It was proved that these regular activities led in the English language can positively affect - to some degree - the progress of reading and social skills together with the development of critical thinking.
