Abstract
This work covers the new concept of "wasteology", which I have defined for the field of architecture as an analytical approach to the design of new "proper" wasteful spaces and how to save "improper" existing ones. For this project I have selected a commercial area of a dense city in Japan, where I have identified improper wasteful spaces that have the potential to be used in better ways. I designed a living space where its functional units (bedroom, kitchen, etc.) are individually scattered across these improper wasteful spaces, each with their own new proper wasteful spaces. The aim of these new designs is to save the mentioned spaces and to change the dynamic of this commercial area by improving its liveliness. With the rapid evolution of technology and transportation methods, many city spaces will become obsolete and wasteful in the near future. The proposed new concept of wastelogy is important as it allows for the identification and repurposing of spaces that are or will become improper wasteful spaces, as it is the case of unused gaps between buildings or some parking lots. To conclude, as this concept develops, it will allow for the restructuration and transformation of neighborhoods or cities as they are optimized in a more chaotic and human manner.
