Abstract
This thesis deals with the position of women in Maori culture. In the first part, the author mentions two different definitions of gender. These are followed by basic information on Maori people, a brief introduction to their history and the structure of traditional Maori society. The author makes a reference to the impacts of the arrival of Europeans and the institution of trade on Maori, laying major emphases on how the position of women was changed. This settlement was gradually overgrowing into a steady settlement and colonisation. Then, description of current situation is provided based on data from the last census conducted in 2013. The second part focuses on two carefully chosen films and thorough analysis of the female characters.
