Abstract
Bakalářská práce "Kritická analýza vyobrazení rasistických jevů ve vybraných dílech Jacka Londona" pojednává o rasové problematice, o níž někteří tvrdí, že je podstatnou měrou zastoupena v dílech tohoto významného amerického autora. To je možno chápat jako problematické, jelikož tato díla mohou nepřímo přispívat k šíření ideologie legitimizující hierarchizaci na základě společenských nerovností, jež významným způsobem nadále ovlivňuje americkou společnost. V teoretické části se práce snaží přinést ucelený pohled na dobu, ve které J. London žil, obzvláště s ohledem na rasismus; na to, jak byl v době Londonova života vnímán, a jaké typické podoby v této době měl. Praktická část se pak soustředí na sledování možného výskytu rasismu a rasistických projevů ve vybraných dílech. Konkrétně se praktická část zabývá analýzou novely Dcera sněhu, a povídek "V odlehlých končinách" a "Odyssea severu," jejichž obsah, ale i způsob, kterým byla díla napsána, byl údajně ovlivněn Londonovou percepcí idey o nadřazenosti bílé rasy. Podstatou bakalářské práce je poukázat na možnou problematičnost Londonových děl s ohledem na jejich percepci, rozšíření a dopad. Je-li pravda, že výše zmíněná díla nesou znaky rasové diskriminace, a schvalují-li myšlenku "rasové nadřazenosti bílé rasy," je možné tvrdit, že by se mohla podílet na jejím šíření, jelikož je tento autor světově známý a jeho díla jsou i v současné době čtená a studovaná; a že je tedy kritika Londonových děl oprávněná.
The bachelor thesis "Critical analysis of the depiction of racist phenomena in the selected works of Jack London" seeks to examine representation of racial issues, which are claimed to be significantly represented in the oeuvre of this American author. Consequently, some have claimed that through such writing London might have indirectly contributed to persistence of racial discrimination, and might thus have helped to extend its impact on American society. In the theoretical part, the thesis tries to bring a comprehensive view of the period in which London lived, with a particular focus on illustrating how the concept of racism was perceived and what typical forms it took at that time - in order to comprehensively assess aspects influencing London's work. In the practical part, the occurrence of racism and racist phenomena is documented in selected works by Jack London. Namely, the novel Daughter of Snows and the short stories "In a Far Country" and "Odyssey of the North," are discussed since it has been claimed that their content and the way these were written were influenced by London's perception of the idea of white supremacy. The objective of this bachelor thesis is to examine whether the selected works contain or even advocate racial discrimination, and should thus be approached with caution. If the claim that the idea of "white racial superiority" is legitimised by the works of Jack London, it might be said that the author may have indirectly contributed to its dissemination since his works have been read and studied worldwide.
