Abstract
This bachelor thesis examines the adaptation of Norse mythology in the films Thor (2011) and Thor: Love and Thunder (2022). by Marvel Studios. The main objective is to analyze how Norse divine beings and mythological elements are adapted into modern cinema and to what extent they deviate from the original myths. The thesis focuses on the accuracy of the portrayal of mythological elements and their transformation within the context of American pop culture. The analysis is based on a comparison of both films in terms of their depiction of mythological characters, narrative elements, and Hollywood storytelling conventions. A key part of the thesis is also the interpretation of these films through the concept of City upon a Hill, derived from John Winthrop's "A Modell of Christian Charity" (1630), and the application of superhero genre theory. The results of the analysis show that Marvel has significantly transformed Norse gods into American superheroes, emphasizing values such as unity and self-sacrifice. The comparison of both films also reveals the increasing influence of Hollywood trends, particularly humor and parody elements, which are more prominent in Thor: Love and Thunder.
