Abstract
Tato bakalářská práce zkoumá vývoj používání výrazů disability, impairment a handicap v britské angličtině v období mezi lety 1990 a 2014. Práce je rozdělena do dvou hlavních částí: teoretická část představuje klíčovou terminologii a relevantní teoretické rámce, zatímco praktická část popisuje metodologii, zdroje dat a podrobnou jazykovou analýzu. Praktická část využívá Britský národní korpus 1994 a 2014 a analyzuje frekvenci a kolokační vzorce vybraných výrazů pomocí softwarů Sketch Engine a LancsBox. Cílem práce je určit, jak se používání a význam těchto tří termínů v čase proměnily a jaké jazykové a společenské faktory mohly tento posun ovlivnit. Studie poukazuje na rostoucí důraz na inkluzivní jazyk a zamýšlí se nad dopadem legislativních reforem, mediálního diskurzu a akademické praxe na vývoj reprezentace disability v britských psaných textech.
Na závěr je v názvu místo disadvantage použito impairment, protože disadvantage má široký socioekonomický význam, zatímco impairment je specificky definováno v klíčových klasifikačních systémech (např. ICF WHO) a běžně se používá v odborných i mediálních kontextech k označení tělesných či kognitivních stavů. To činí impairment přesnějším termínem pro zaměření této studie. Právě proto byl název změněn.
This Bachelor's thesis examines the evolution of the terms disability, impairment, and handicap in British English between 1990 and 2014. The thesis is divided into two main parts: the theoretical part introduces the key terminology and relevant theoretical frameworks, while the practical part presents the methodology, corpus sources, and a detailed linguistic analysis. Using the British National Corpus 1994 and 2014, the practical section investigates the frequency and collocational patterns of the selected terms through Sketch Engine and LancsBox software. The aim of the thesis is to determine how the usage and meanings of the three terms have changed over time and what linguistic and societal factors may have influenced this shift. The study highlights the growing prominence of inclusive language and reflects on the impact of legal reforms, media discourse, and academic practices on the evolving representation of disability in British written texts. As a final note, the title now uses impairment instead of disadvantage because disadvantage has a broad socio-economic meaning, whereas impairment is specifically defined in key classification systems (e.g. WHO's ICF) and is regularly used in both professional and media contexts to refer to bodily or cognitive conditions. This makes impairment a more precise term for the focus of this study. That is why the title was changed.
