The experimentally observed affine similarity of the time profiles of a longitudinal deformation pulse propagating in a more or less one-dimensional linear viscoelastic body has been used by the authors to develop a pulse method of identification of an affine solitary pulse. The properties of the material tested can be described by means of the frequency relationships as well as by means of the very early time parts of rheological functions. The material functions identified have been verified for correctness by comparing the experimentally determined time profile of the pulse to the time profile predicted by means of the material functions identified.en
