Bioethanol, in the form of E-85 (fuel containing 85 % of ethanol mixed with 15 % of gasoline and various additives), is typically used in "Flexible Fuel Vehicles". In the Czech Republic, due to its favorable price, it is also used, as E-85 or mixed with gasoline, in ordinary engines without any modifications or adjustments. In this study, an older Škoda Felicia car with fuel-injected spark ignition engine with a three-way catalyst was operated alternately on gasoline and on E-85 on a hilly urban and rural route. Exhaust emissions of carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC), nitrogen oxides (NOx) and total particulate matter (PM) mass and length were measured with a portable, on-board monitoring system. Multiple runs were made on each fuel to verify test-to-test repeatability. The engine control unit has remarkably well adapted to E-85 by increasing the fuel injector pulse width, so that the engine operated mostly at stoichiometric ratio on both gasoline and E-85. Operation on E-85 has resulted, compared to gasoline, in about 60 % lower emissions of CO, three times higher emissions of NOx, comparable emissions of HC, slightly higher particulate mass, and slightly lower total particle length.en
