In this article selected properties of basalt fibres in comparison with glass fibres are presented. The properties were investigated after tempering to 50, 100, 200, 300 degrees C. The breaking strength, deformation to break and sound wave velocity were measured. Structural changes of fibres were identified by scanning electron microscopy. From basalt filament fibres sewing threads were prepared. Their applicability for sewing of glass fabrics filtering bags was verified. It was evaluated that the basalt sewing threads have generally little mechanical resistance. Improvement of their performance can be made by coating the surface with suitable polymeric materials, for example with PET.en
