- ItemA poly(3-hydroxybutyrate)-chitosan polymer conjugate for the synthesis of safer gold nanoparticles and their applications(Royal Society of Chemistry, 2018-01-01) Silvestri Daniele; Waclawek Stanislaw Witold; Sobel Bartłomiej; Torres Mendieta Rafael Omar; Novotný Vít; Nguyen Nhung Anh Huynh; Ševců Alena; Vellora Thekkae Padil Vinod; Müllerová Jana; Stuchlík Martin; Petrangeli Papini Marco; Černík Miroslav; Varma RajendraA facile and eco-friendly approach is developed for the synthesis of a poly(3-hydroxybutyrate)–chitosan (PHB–chit) polymer conjugate, which is an ideal material for the synthesis of safer gold nanoparticles (nAu). The synthesized products are characterized by various electron-based, optical and spectroscopic techniques including the catalytic activity and the stability/toxicity of nAu. In contrast to the conventional synthesis approaches, the use of PHB–chit results in generation of a highly stable and size-controlled nAu material that exhibits important catalytic activity towards the reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) to 4-aminophenol, and at the same time shows no toxicity against living bacterial systems such as Escherichia coli or Staphylococcus aureus. The synthesis route reported herein would inspire future developments that circumvent toxicity issues of relevance to living systems while performing common catalytic experimentation.

The present study focuses on the fabrication of electrospun fibres based on gum karaya (GK), a natural tree gum, with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and functionalization of the membrane with TiO2 nanoparticles with further methane plasma treatment. The GK/PVA/TiO2 membrane was analyzed with several techniques including: fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), and water contact angle, in order to characterize its morphological and physicochemical properties. The GK/PVA/TiO2 membrane was further successfully used for the degradation (under UV irradiation) of bisphenol A and diclofenac from aqueous solution. It was also observed that the degradation kinetics of these compounds are faster in comparison to the UV treatment alone.
