- ItemComparison of Grocery Shopping Behaviour of Slovak Residents on the Slovak-Austrian Border: an Empirical Study – Hainburg an der Donau(Technická Univerzita v Liberci, ) Kita, Pavol; Križan, František; Bilková, Kristína; Zeman, Milan; Siviček, Tomáš; Ekonomická fakultaFood is a part of human life, forming its existential and cultural basis. It also has become the basis of trade and a measure of the level of one or another culture, the engine of economic development. All these themes resonate more and more in debates in Slovakia as well. There are several reasons why. Slovaks still pay relatively more for food in comparison to neighbouring Austrians, who benefit from a rich offer of food at an affordable price. This might be related to an organized agricultural landscape, which is the product of economically prosperous food production. Bratislava residents’ dissatisfaction with shopping experiences and products on offer in the current retail network in Bratislava forces them to travel to shop in the town of Hainburg an der Donau. The article states the types of Slovak consumers and their identities. An empirical study was conducted on a sample of 909 Slovak consumers shopping in Austrian grocery stores located in Hainburg an der Donau on the Slovak-Austrian border. The respondents rated their shopping experience and products on offer in the town. The study compares Slovak and Austrian stores based on the consumers’ reasoning behind purchasing food in Austria and consumer satisfaction with the stores in both countries. Multidimensional scaling was used to present the results of the study. The results of the study represent a comparison of shopping behaviour of Slovak residents when considering shopping in Austria. Constructed perception maps identify the main types of consumers indicating the largest discrepancy in purchasing groceries in Austrian and Slovak stores.
- ItemFDI as a Source of Patent Activity in V4(Technická Univerzita v Liberci, 2013-08) Fuchsová, Eva; Siviček, Tomáš; Ekonomická fakultaThe foreign direct investment (FDI) have played an irreplaceable role during the transformation processes in Visegrad Four (V4) countries contributing to successful transition from central planned to market-based economy system, bringing new technologies, capital sources, know-how in many areas leading to higher productivity and above average economic growth, and they contributed to increasing competitiveness. The current challenges these economies face are twofold - first, it is a need for a strategic shift from the growth and competitiveness fuelled very much by the low cost labour force to a qualitatively new model based on creative and knowledge based aspects; second, it is an overall economic downturn, which affects smaller and open economies very significantly, since they are still dependant on external sources of growth like foreign demand. Generally, in the current fragile economic situation around the globe the innovative approach is seen as a chance for recovery bringing new effective solutions for companies, households and even states, more over it can also contribute to tackle global challenges. Despite the general tendency of research outcomes towards more complex and sophisticated composite indexes measuring competitiveness and innovations, the paper is focused on examining and testing of selected input and output indicators, namely FDI and their influence on the dynamics of patent indicators, namely total FDI inward stocks to the region and number of patent applications. The paper particularly analysis the relation of FDI inward stocks coming to the V4 region from the 15 most innovative countries according to the Global Innovation Index 2012 and the number of patent applications during the years 200-2010.
- ItemTransformation of retailing in post-communist Slovakia in the context of globalization(Technická Univerzita v Liberci, ) Križan, František; Bilková, Kristína; Kita, Pavol; Siviček, Tomáš; Ekonomická fakultaRetailing is a form of exchange, which mediates the movement of goods between the manufacturer, their transfer and sales to the phase of the field of final consumption. For the past 25 years significant transformation processes have been identified in the retailing of post-communist countries that have both an economic and also spatial character. The aim of this paper is to analyze retailing in Slovakia and its development in the period of 25 years with specific attention paid to the transformation process. In the paper these processes are classified and defined in the time and space context. The conclusions of the study show that in Slovakia some trends in globalization processes can be identified, which are typical in other developed countries. These changes become evident particularly after 1989. The process of atomization of the retail is the first analysed process and it is typical for the transition period from the centrally-planned economy to the market economy. The further processes are related to manifestations of globalization in the Slovakian retail. Those are the processes of internationalization, cooperation, and concentration in the retail. By analyzing all of the changes in the Slovak retail it is then possible to identify several stages of transformation. The characteristics of the globalization processes in the retail sector are more intense in urban areas than in rural. For Slovakia, there is a delayed transition in the processes in comparison with neighbouring countries. The size of the market determines the intensity of the manifestations of the globalization processes. The ultimate consolidation of retailers in Slovakia can be categorized as transformation process in the initial stage of development.
