    This diploma thesis focuses on the economic development of Japan from the second half of the 1980s through today. The first chapter covers events, which led to the emergence of the so-called bubble economy, depicts the situation after its collapse and describes the role of the government and Bank of Japan?s executives in dealing with arisen problems. Last but not least, it tries to outline the causes of the decade long stagnation. The second chapter refers to Japan at the beginning of the new millennium and thus offers a contemporary view on economic and political matters, though attention is also paid to demography and international relations. In the final chapter author attempts to summarize presented facts and adds thoughts on future prospects of the Japanese economy.
