- ItemThe corporate social responsibility in the Romanian banking systém(Technická Univerzita v Liberci, ) Dinu, Vasile; Bunea, Mariana; Ekonomická fakultaFor the Romanian banking system, the corporate social responsibility (CSR) concept is not a new one, but its importance raises more and more awareness lately, the financial crisis of 2008 significantly bringing to surface the need to integrate the moral principles in the banking activity. The corporate social responsibility (CSR) takes into account the strategies that help companies to run their business in an ethical way, when talking about the relations to the other members of the society. The CSR can include a wide range of partnerships with the local communities, investments with a real social impact of the corporations (education, art, and environmental protection), developing relations between the firms and their clients, employees and their families. On one hand, the research aims at measuring the level of knowledge of the information regarding the corporate social responsibility of the banks in Romania in the timeframe 2015–2017 and on the other hand, to identify the possible relations between the CSR indexes and the financial performance, seen through the return on assets indicators (ROA) and return on equity indicators (ROE). In order to accomplish these objectives, the research methodology was based on the content analysis method, in order to identify the categories of corporate social responsibility that are included in the CSR index, obtained from the annual reports of the sustainability, published by the analyzed banks. To test the correlations of the dependent and independent variables, there were used correlation techniques and regression of the analyzed data, using the SPSS soft. Even with its limitations, this research can be a very strong source of information and reflection for the decision makers in the Romanian banking sector and more than that, can encourage an even bigger transparency of the information regarding the social and environment responsibility, as well as emphasizing of a performing management under all aspects that are related to the corporate social responsibility.
- ItemEconomic deglobalization – from hypothesis to reality(Technická Univerzita v Liberci, 2015-06-03) Postelnicu, Cătălin; Dinu, Vasile; Dabija, Dan-Cristian; Ekonomická fakultaLately, a new term is used in international economic literature, namely “de-globalization” which has already sparked off numerous debates. As expected, some economists were quick to adopt it unhesitatingly, but others have labelled it as “absurd”, “superfi cial”, “simple”, “anachronistic” and even “counterproductive”. In fact, there are two diverging processes opposed to each other, both worth mentioning. First – globalization – with its multiple meanings and defi nitions, and the second – deglobalization – which is just beginning to fi nd a place within the confi nes of concepts used in international economics literature. The issue is not to treat them only as antonyms, but rather to demonstrate the causal relation between them. We consider trying to measure deglobalization as an important step in determining the true meaning of such a phenomenon, or if it is real. Also, would be interesting to fi nd out if deglobalization is really a long lasting trend, or just a short term turn in the evolution of the world economy. Using the “globalization index” and its components as a tool in this direction could be one of the potential solutions in defi ning the meaning of the new and complex changes which tends to shape the international economic relations and, after all, the international business environment. Although it is admitted not being a perfect tool, it could be a starting point in studying such a vast change. Therefore, the motivation of this article is to contribute to theoretical debates that bear on this new term, given that, as in the case of globalization itself, economists have not yet reached a consensus on the defi nition.
- ItemThe effects of private sector companies’ research and development investments on the adoption of cloud computing services in the European Union(Technická Univerzita v Liberci, ) Toader, Liviu; Paraschiv, Dorel; Dinu, Vasile; Manea, Daniela; Mihai, Mihaela; Ekonomická fakultaAs European economies rely more and more on know-how and technology, the importance of investment in research and development, especially from the private sector, is increasing. Private investment in research and development leads to innovation and the creation of know-how and technologies that can increase productivity, competitiveness and contribute to economic growth. Private investment in research and development is particularly important in dynamic sectors with high added value, such as the IT&C sector. Cloud computing is one of the most popular IT&C technologies in recent years, particularly because it bridges the gap between large and small and medium-sized companies in terms of IT&C infrastructure investment needs. Due to cloud computing, small companies can benefit from the same technology and infrastructure as the bigger ones, but at lower costs, without having to make large-scale investments in IT&C infrastructure elements such as: computing power, networks, data storage, specialized software products, etc. This paper analyzes the link between the intensity of investments in research and development (R&D), calculated as the share of research and development expenses made by companies in the business environment (business enterprise sector) in GDP or as a percentage of total research and development expenses, in relation to the adoption of cloud computing technology within companies in the Member States of the European Union. The research results indicate a direct and moderate relationship between the intensity of private R&D spending and the adoption of cloud computing technologies among companies in the Member States. This result can be attributed to both the increase in the overall digitization of the countries most active in terms of private R&D investment, as well as the need for affordable and strong IT&C infrastructure to maximize future returns and drive economic growth.
- ItemImpact of Education and Economic Growth on Labour Migration in the European Union. A Panel Data Analysis(Technická Univerzita v Liberci, ) Istudor, Nicolae; Dinu, Vasile; Gogu, Emilia; Prada, Elena-Maria; Petrescu, Irina-Elena; Ekonomická fakultaSince migration is considered to play an important role on the attainment of the sustainable development goals (SDG’s) this study analyses the reversed perspective of the migration-SDG’s nexus. The data set consists of 308 observations on 28 European Union countries (including the United Kingdom) over a time span of 11 years (between 2008 and 2018). The analysis employed various stages of estimation in order to compare different results obtained from the panel data regression models. Besides the classical panel data regression models, the paper includes the estimation of Arellano-Bover/Blundell-Bond model that uses the Generalized Method of Moments (also known as GMM) as an econometric tool to solve the endogeneity of the selected variables. The focus is on two sustainable development goals: labour and economic growth, and education of the European Union member states plus the United Kingdom. The results showed that there is a significant influence of the selected variables on the migration flows at the European Union level. Although there are some contradictory results regarding the direction and statistical significance of the link between the variables of interest, most estimators do not have fundamentally different results. The GDP per capita keeps its positive impact on migration by generating an immigration flow towards countries with high GDP per capita. Economic growth proves to be the main trigger of migration, while education also plays an important role in shaping migration. The importance of this study derives from the reversed perspectives analysis, considering migration as being directly influenced by the achievement of the sustainable development goals.
- ItemTHE MIGRATION PROCESS OF ROMANIANS TO ANDALUSIA, SPAIN. FOCUS ON SOCIOECONOMIC IMPLICATIONS(Technická Univerzita v Liberci, ) Grosu, Raluca Mariana; Dinu, Vasile; Ekonomická fakultaBased on a case study research carried out among Romanian immigrants in Andalusia, Spain, through this paper we aim to outline a wide image of the investigated migratory process. The focus is on the description of its fundamental characteristics and on its socio-economic implications for both the sending and the receiving regions. In this context, we aim to raise awareness among policy makers in relation with the magnitude and complexity of the phenomenon, for its proper management. Statistical and econometrical analysis were developed in order to process the information gathered through the quantitative research, while the inductive approach was used in order to analyze the information obtained from the qualitative pieces of research. The scarce fi nancial conditions in Romania determined many people to search for job opportunities – in particular in agriculture, child or elderly care, or housekeeping – in Andalusia, especially in the provinces of Seville and Huelva. However, during the past period, the economic crisis was strongly putting a mark on the Spanish economy and many of the investigated immigrants were unemployed. Even though, in general, their coming back intentions were not very clear. Socio-economic implications – both positive and negative – arise from the migration process of Romanians to Andalusia, for both the sending and the receiving countries. Remittances, solving shortages on the labor market, or increase in regional and national incomes may fi t in the fi rst category, while the second category may be composed of examples such as families left behind, school dropouts, children involvement in dangerous entourages and/or in illegal activities, tensions on the labor market etc.
- ItemA Monte Carlo method simulation of the European funds that can be accessed by Romania in 2014-2020(Technical university of Liberec, Czech Republic, 2017-10-02) Săvoiu, Gheorghe; Burtescu, , Emil; Dinu, Vasile; Tudoroiu, Ligian; Ekonomická fakultaThe authors dealt with finding some relevant simulation solutions for the value of the European funds that can be accessed by Romania in the second budget cycle (2014-2020) of the European Union (EU), in which the national economy is participating after the 2007 accession. The article presents, in a brief conceptual introduction, the option for simulation, not only as economical and statistical alternative but also as conceptual and technical method, followed by an analysis section for the EU funds accessed by Romania in the 2007-2013 financial period and in the first three years of 2014-2020 financial period, with a role in generating hypotheses and scenarios of a type of modelling the process of accessing and specific absorption (including all types of rates, from the current absorption rate to the actual rate, with revenue in advance, etc.). A methodology section describes the rationale for selecting the method of simulation as Monte Carlo, and also the main hypotheses, detailed scenarios and integrated characteristic variables. The scenario-making eventually shaped three options by combining criteria of stability/instability, nuanced by optimistic/ pessimistic type scenarios. The analysis of the variables described by a probability distribution was conducted statistically on several types of samples simulated by the Monte Carlo method, from 100 draws to 200; 300; 400; and finally 500 and 1,000 draws. A presentation of the final simulation results and a number of major comments regarding their calibration, confrontation, clarity and statistical analysis, together with some final remarks as conclusions, limitations and perspectives, end the research approach.
- ItemOpportunities and challenges for managers within the East-European agriculture sector: Case study on Romania(Technická Univerzita v Liberci, ) Dinca, Violeta Mihaela; Trocinescu, Beatrice; Stamule, Simona; Bunea, Mariana; Dinu, Vasile; Ekonomická fakultaAgriculture has always been essential to the development of human society, providing the food necessary for human survival. For the Romanian economy, agriculture is a very important sector in terms of the number of enterprises involved and the agricultural area used, but also because of the workforce employed in the sector. However, Romanian agriculture is a vulnerable sector, which has had to face several unfavourable events in recent years. The COVID-19 pandemic, the energy crisis, the conflict in Ukraine, and the lack of agricultural inputs have brought many risks for Romanian farmers in 2023, such as higher food prices and more expensive electricity for consumers. This paper aims to identify the perceptions of the managers regarding the outcomes of the recent events (the COVID-19 pandemic, the energy crisis, the conflict in Ukraine) on the future potential of agriculture in Romania and to determine their perceptions about the impact of other issues with which agricultural companies had to deal with in recent years (climate change, draught, inflation, governmental measures). Other goals of the paper were to find out the managers’ plans and prospects to potentially introduce or use new technologies and digitization within their own companies and uncover their assessments regarding the sector’s future within the European and international context. To identify these perspectives, qualitative research was carried out through in-depth interviews with respondents holding leadership positions within 16 Romanian agricultural companies. The data was analyzed in order to identify similarities and discrepancies within their statements and find corroborative ideas that could help improve the sector. The results of the paper showed how the COVID-19 pandemic and the unstable geo-political context along with other issues increased production costs, but favored digitization and technology. In the past years, because different events changed the European and Romanian economy, a lot of academic research has revolved around the areas of health, energy and technology. Therefore, the study brings elements of originality because of the theme and the approach, which provide valuable insights not only for Romania but for other countries in the region as well.
- ItemPREDICTING JOB SATISFACTION AND WORK ENGAGEMENT BEHAVIOR IN THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC: A CONSERVATION OF RESOURCES THEORY APPROACH(Technická Univerzita v Liberci, ) Nemțeanu, Marcela-Sefora; Dinu, Vasile; Pop, Rebeka-Anna; Dabija, Dan-Cristian; Ekonomická fakultaThe rapid spread of the COVID-19 pandemic has forced organizations to impose physical distancing restrictions on employees and to practice teleworking on a large scale. Adapting to the new context has generated an increase in job insecurity, and a decrease in employee productivity concerning task completion, boosting stress and counterproductive work behavior. Although the challenges employees face when carrying out their activities and work-related responsibilities, together with an understanding of the factors generating counterproductive work behaviors and job insecurity have been intensely studied in the literature, their manifestation and impact within organizations in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic is barely covered. This paper aims to fill this research gap by evaluating the way internal vision communication, employee reward systems, knowledge, and skills capitalization, and the maintaining of task performance can diminish counterproductive work behaviors and job insecurity generated by the COVID-19 pandemic, influencing employee satisfaction and behavior in this stress-inducing context. The responses collected from 863 Romanian employees are modelled with the help of structural equations in SmartPLS. The results show that in the case of counterproductive work behavior, employee satisfaction diminishes, while efficient performance of tasks and responsibilities, knowledge and skills capitalization, internal vision communication, and the existence of an employee reward system for employee input can all generate greater organizational attachment. Job satisfaction mediates the influence of performance, internal marketing, and counterproductive work behavior in employees’ attachment towards their respective organizations. The paper contributes to the development of the Conservation of Resources Theory, highlighting, in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, ways in which employee satisfaction and work engagement behavior can be enhanced, thus contributing to diminishing counterproductive work behaviors, and fostering a pleasant and safe work environment.
