    This thesis attempts to gauge whether sentence planning, resocialisation and subsequent preparation of inmates prior to release from incarceration assist target groups of respondents in their return to the wider society, and whether such programs prevent re-offending and further incarceration.While working with inmates, qualified prison service staff employ resocialisation and sentence planning as key attributes, both to minimize the negative effects of incarceration, and to prepare inmates as well as possible for their return to society.This thesis comprises both practical and theoretical parts. The theoretical part deals with the formulation of theoretical propositions based on sentence planning issues. It defines basic divisions of sentence planning, methods of work and activities with inmates within a framework of individual set sentence plans.The practical part of this thesis focuses on the answering of questions formulated within given preconditions. The research attempts to illustrate selected empirical findings relating to pitfalls in resocialisation processes for inmates serving custodial sentences.
