    Bachelor thesis dealt with a major issue of the death penalty in the context of today´s society. In addition of the theoretical base, the bachelor thesis was based on the societal attitudes towards this issue. Its aim was to characterize the attitudes of the Liberec Region´s citizens towards the death penalty and analyze these attitudes with regard to age, sex, educational level and religious affiliation of respondents. The work consisted of two main parts.It was the theoretical part, which with the aid of processing and presentation of expert sources, besides it described and explained the basic terminology in this area, it also dealt with the broader issue of capital punishment.The practical part of the thesis surveyed - using a questionnaires distributed among the hundred randomly selected citizens of Liberec Region - attitudesto death penalty. The results showed that a majority of the Liberec Region´s citizens are exponents of capital punishment, but also that a significant proportion of citizens of Liberec Region doesn´t have a clear view of the death penalty. These findings resulted in concretemeasures proposed in the fieldof criminal legislation, prevention and education. The greatest contributionof the thesis in relation to solved problems can be considered a finding that the death penalty is a topic which deals with the public, is not indifferent, and that the current legislative situation and the absence of capital punishment in the Czech law doesn´t reflect the needs, desires and trends of the Czech public in fact.
