    Diploma thesis is dealing with methods of teaching English as a foreign language at the first grade of basic school. The goal is to show how we can proceed in teaching with minimal use of mother tongue.Basic findings from the area of teaching very young learners as well as methodology principles specific for the age are introduced in the theoretical part.The theory is supplemented with methodology comments to connect theoretical and practical parts. In the practical part methodology of classroom research is presented as well as examples of lesson plans.The goal is to explain the importance of using the target language in the process of its teaching as well as the necessity of not missing out the sense of the mother tongue.
